What to Include in a Website

The content of a website varies widely from company to company. No matter the size of the company or site, include the following pages:

  • An introduction: Include a brief summary about the company on the home page with a longer narrative on an “About Us” page.
  • Contact information: Include contact information on its own page and/or throughout the site.
  • Products or services: Product images, before and after images, and case studies are all good ways to convey what you offer.
  • Call to action: Give customers the information or tools they need to buy your products or services.

I’m often asked if it’s a good idea to have a blog. My answer: a qualified, “Yes”. There are a number of advantages to blogs:

  • You can interact with your customers — you give them information; they give you feedback.
  • Blogs are easy to update and search engines reward frequently updated sites.
  • Because blogs are dynamic, i.e. continuously updated, customers will have a reason to return to your site.

Despite the advantages of a blog, it’ll only be useful under the following conditions:

  • You should be to be committed to updating it. The point of a blog — as a marketing tool — is to keep readers coming back for more.
  • Your content has to be interesting and relevant to your audience for readership retention.
  • You need to be comfortable writing your own content, or be willing to hire a copywriter. Poorly written copy will be a distraction to your readers. At the very least, write the text in a program with a grammar and spellchecker.
